Typhoon Maring Update, August 19, 2013: Orange Water Alert Level

MANILA, Philippines - Tropical Storm Maring was spotted at 575 km East of Itbayat, Batanes based on the latest PAGASA weather bulletin issued at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 19, 2013.

Typhoon Maring is reportedly moving east northeast at 7 kph with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph and gustiness of 90 kph.

Due to continued rains brought about by Typhoon Maring, authorities have ordered the opening of gates in the Ipo, Ambuklao, Binga, and Magat Dams. The San Roque dam now serves as the catch basin of the waters being released from the opened dams.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is focusing their operations in the Cavite, Laguna and Rizal areas.

All flights to Caticlan has been cancelled.

According to the DSWD, about 37 evacuation centers were already set-up by the agency.

As of posting, water alert level was lowered by PAGASA from Red Alert to Orange Alert.

8-foot Snake Found in Tondo, Manila

MANILA, Philippines - A snake measuring about 8-foot long was found in Tondo, Manila during the height of Typhoon Maring.

Residents in the area reportedly discovered the giant snake floating in the flood.

The presence of snakes in flooded areas has become a common thing around the world. Burmese pythons were seen recently during floods in Canada and US.

More updates on this 8-foot snake will be posted on this once they become available.

Suspension of Classes, August 19, 2013 Update

MANILA, Philippines - Due to heavy rains overnight, officials declared suspension of classes in several areas on Monday, August 19, 2013. Continued rain downfall was brought about by Typhoon Maring that enhanced Habagat

Schools and local officials made early announcement of no classes in their areas. No classes were declared as early as Sunday evening.
