The twins' mother, Maria Jones-Elliot, broke her water bag and delivered Amy on June 1 and Katie on August 27, 2012 at the Waterford Regional Hospital. Amy was born four-months premature and weighed just over one pound.
Dr. Eddie O'Donnell, one of the members of the delivery team who witnessed the unusual, record setting event, said that "Most people haven't heard of this. You can end up losing a twin, it could be stillborn."
Jones-Elliot revealed how doctors described the situation of the twins. The mother described the trying times that she and husband Chris had gone through.
According to Maria,
The doctors told me there was very little hope of them surviving as they were so premature. Amy was fighting for her life in an incubator and Katie was struggling to survive in my womb. After hours, Chris and I said, 'Enough is enough. Let nature take its course.' It was the hardest three months of our lives.
Amy and Katie has passed their critical health conditions and are now reportedly living a healthy life with their family. See them in the following video from AOL.
The Huffington Post reported that "
Maria Jones-Elliott and her husband Chris Elliot have been in contact with Guinness World Records. If their claim of 87 days between the birth of their twins is substantiated then they will break the Guinness World Record title for Longest interval between birth of twins. We currently await their evidence.Peggy Lynn of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest interval of twin delivery. Lynn had an 84 days of interval, between 1995 and 1996, when she delivered her daughter Hanna and son Eric.
